Are Intellictuals Cowards?

Dear Friends

We are facing many problems in day-to-day life. Problems might be of different kind. Personal, family-level, Institutional, Company-level, Social, National and so on. The response or reaction to these problems, common to all, vary with the section, especially educational-level.

Uneducated people react or respond in more or less in an intense manner. Many a time s they come together to address the problem faced by them. They are ready to act on the problem for resolving. They can go the extent of sacrificing everything what they have, money, energy, physical efforts, family, property etc. Once they decide to resist the problem, their act follows in the devotional manner. Intellect nearly stops at that point. This can be described as they fight against the problem in a 'tooth and nail' fashion. They face the problem courageously.

While if we see the similar response of the Educated, Intellectual people, when the nature of the problem is same, our conclusion is shocking. First thing this intellectual entity does it he starts assuming or thinking that the problem does not exist. If he cant do that he starts thinking that the problem is there but not for me , it is for others. After this stage is also over and once he starts thinking that it is his own problem even, then he thinks that what others are doing. And if others' efforts can fetch the expected solution or results, I will also get the benefit. So he/she tries to avoid to participate in joint action. Or else he participates but in a safe way. For example, he/she gives mute consent, gives signature, gives frank opinion orally but in confidence, talks loudly in family or with unrelated friends, blames others who are fighting for the cause or sometimes/ same time who are against the fighting. He/she avoids to give even a logically correct opinion with reference to the problem. He exposes himself in the most mysterious way so that no one can conclude on which side he is telling something.
Ramaay Swasti, Raavanaay Swasti. He uses all his intellect to safe-guard his job, name, fame, reputation, wealth, property etc. He does not wish to take any risk. He wont participate in any open movement. But will use intellect to prove how he is correct and all others are at fault. How he is the only rational, intelligent person out of all. He will try to break the unity of the fighting people. He can talk to both the sides with equal zeal and competence, protecting his self-benefits. If any movement fails, he will be the first person to publically declare that he was telling everybody that this move will not work. If the movement yields success he will roar like a lion and project himself as if he was the only visionary to suggest and conduct that movement to its logical end. He will use his vocabulary to describe his sacrifice, his dedication, his courage and boldness, his total involvement in the most impressive manner. He will try to suppress his exactly opposite behaviour during his talks and speeches, public and private.

Why this difference exists between the behaviour of uneducated people and so-called educated/intellectual people? Do you at least agree to my observation? Is the social
system responsible for this? Is the educational system makes them Coward? Does the degree, wealth makes them condensed/narrow minded in their thought process? Is the selfishness directly proportion to the educational degrees they obtain? Is it the aim of the present education system to produce slaves or slave minded professionals. Is the examination system snatches from them Nirbhayata/Boldness or forces them to become horizontal throughout their life? Is it the pressure of the parents or family that forces them only to look after their studies when they are students and nothing else? You look after yourself only, why you are bothered about others? Is this slogan is literally followed in almost all the families? Competitions everywhere, right from admissions to employment is heavy. Is it responsible for the mentality of Parents and Their Wards? Is the present teaching-learning process is totally ineffective to develop or inculcate the basic qualities like 'Fight against any injustice?', 'Resist the unjust', 'Nirbhay Bano', 'Fight for the Right' etc? Are Teachers unaware that they are responsible for this type of development of the students as well? Are Social and political leaders a shear failure to inculcate such qualities in the youngsters or intellectuals through their own Ideal life?

When one will go for the answers he has to apply the same yardstick for
both the categories, uneducated and educated. If one logic works for one group, it should be logically true for other group as well.

Another thing which one may consider is that if we see the prehistorical days of our Nation, the leadership, a very influential and powerful leadership, of the nation was in the hands of highly intellectual people who sacrificed everything for the freedom of Our Nation. Some were reputed
Barristers, some were IAS/ICS officers, Some were Teachers in reputed Universities, Some were Educationists, Mathematicians to the level of Ranglers, Engineers and Scientists of High profile. Then where from all the courageous qualities emerged at that time? This study will also help you all to arrive to the right analysis and conclusion.

Will you please help me to arrive to a correct conclusion?

  1. Sir, putting forward my thoughts on this topic. I think the issue is not just with being educated or uneducated. It is with one’s own nature – whether one wants to act or expects someone else to act on his/ her behalf. Whether one wants to assume leadership position or always likes to be led by others. Whether one is willing to take risk, put everything at stake for the cause or always follow safe and secure paths. We have this colloquial in Marathi which goes something like this: Let Shivaji be born (to fight against the injustice); but at my neighbour’s place… meaning I agree that “someone” has to rise against the injustice; but that someone does not include me! ....

So, I feel it’s more of an instinct and urge to act than just being educated. May be we expect the urge to be more just because one is educated. But again it’s the educated class that doesn’t even do the simple thing of casting a vote in elections and fulfill the democratic responsibility.

May be the instinct to act fades away or never builds up with education. The thought process could be that I can’t change the system. What difference I alone can make? What if others don’t join or give up in between? Let’s try to adjust and live with the problem. Which leads to eventually undesirable consequences ... something similar to that boiling frog legend…?

    Warm Regards,
    Rohit

  2. Sir,

Though you are right in saying that illiterate do take up arms immediately when they are roused, also consider the fact that they are usually easily influenced by a person who can bond with them, by making a good speech. A good speaker who can find a connect with an audience can really influence people.
We see this in election rallies( though here the people are given free sarees/1 kilo rice, wheat, other pulses/ free liquor etc) or take the case of naxals and maoists: They have very good motivators, who make even kids as young as 13 years join them. Very few illiterate people will really sit back and think about what has been actually said in an "OBJECTIVE" manner. They see only the viewpoint that is shown to them and act upon it. So the question here is, the uneducated are quick to act, but is it because they have thought about it and logically concluded on the issue, or is it because they have been goaded into action?

Now let us come to the literate people. They see the problems they face everyday. But very few 'notice' them. It has become a part of their life. The govt is to blame to a certain extent. You might say that the govt is elected by people and if they don't exercise their right, the wrong people get chosen by the easily influenced section of population. But there is still rigging, vote bank politics, etc. Perhaps this the reason that an educated person will think of not voting. Let us come to the action part now. Many people of the great Indian Middle Class just want to get good grades, get a good job, marry, settle down, and this is what is expected of them even by the society by and large(it's another issue that some don't even do that much!) They don't want to get involved in issues which won't take them any closer to their goal. This is the 'RAT RACE". If you win the race you are still a rat! However, you are a rat which has good grades, a good job, a family. Which is the upper limit for many people.

But this is not the end of story. Educated people can and have made difference to the world. (both good and bad, but a difference)There are great thinkers in today's world. There still are people who believe that if they have taken up something, they should give full justice to it. " My Dharma towards my Vrutti" There are people who believe they should only that which they are best at, so that they can add some value. I believe that you can achieve your pinnacle only if you are in a career/job which you love the most and only then can you feel truly liberated.
That said, education opens up a world of possibilties to those who choose to use them. It gives us the power to be "OBJECTIVE"
Some choose to use it, others don't. Education standardiezs people to an extent, but a thinker will find other ways to open up his/her mind.
To conclude, I would say that there are people who do justice to their work and think beyond the obvious, and this world is opened up only by education. What you choose to make of what has been given to you decides the person that you will become.

  3. Sir,
I fully agree with the question put forth by you. I will try to answer it with a theory of mine that is not ratified but it hasn't failed me yet.

Everybody in the world has come for a purpose. They don't understand it always but it is meant for them. We all hear stuff like this all the time. It is said that it is easier for people to say "i don't care" to something and just lead their life, but it takes real courage to fight.

It may be about the fighting part of it, it may be the negation, it may be a sense of contentment to change, it may even be a sense of vengeance. But it has long been my belief that people don't become happy about life unles they fight against something. People spent their entire lives fighting until their last breath for the freedom of India. They seem to be the happiest people in the world. But now the conveniences we have make us lack ourselves that sense of revolt, the adrenaline, the purpose. We keep ourselves waiting for that one thing that we have to fight against and the people that get it and win the fight are the happiest people in the world. Why do you think that every generation has a different viewpoint to the world? It is not a coincidence. Why do you think kids from conventional, tough households turn out to be more strong independent and willed? They fight against dogma, they fight all their life. They are experts at it by the time they have to work for money. It is a pice of cake by then.

Intellectuals have grown immune to that fundamental urge, the desire the craving for doing something different. The ones that still have it, are already at the top.The ones whose craving does not survive formal education become adamant in being indifferent . That is their fight. Stupid fight bu8t it defines them. Your hardships and your choices are you. Your existrnce in every sense of the term.
But when the craving does arise finalyy, then the fire sets the entire world ablaze i nits glory and leaves it amazed at the achievements made by the word NO.

So, are intellectuals cowards, no. They are out there, waiting.
    For a chance.
To show the world that the word NO can change the world as we know it.
    Every time.
